The 10 Most Destructive Human Behaviors
Dear Reader,
When you compare humans, the so called "evolved" species, to most other animals, it's clear that people do a lot of things that are destructive not only to our own kind, but also ourselves. Lying. Cheating. Stealing. Stress. Murder and mayhem uncaring about the consequences. All in all, we may not be the such a good example of evolution. Turns out, science has taken a look at why such an intelligent species is also so awful and self-destructive. The findings are downright fascinating.
No
one knows why people lie so much, but research finds it's common and tied to some pretty deep psychological issues. Lying is closely linked to self-esteem - if you feel that your self-esteem is threatened, you start lying at higher levels. True that animals are capable of being deceptive, but certainly not to the same levels or for the same motivations as humans.
Sometimes stealing can be the result of need, but there are those (kleptomaniacs) for whom stealing is a thrill. Interesting that even monkeys steal, some species use alarm calls to warn fellow monkeys of predators and then seal the food left by those who scattered.
Violence is a part of all recorded human history, which makes some think that it's in our genetic code, or it is perhaps a craving that affects reward centers in the brain. Aggression happens among just about all vertebrates and is needed to get (and keep) resources like food, territory and mates. Ours may have evolved to help with survival and reproduction, not all that necessary in our modern age, but powerful drives all the same.
Get this... even monkeys gamble. It appears that almost winning activates circuitry inside the brain and enhances the urge to gamble. This is born out by gamblers who report near misses as special, encouraging more gambling not less. Studies have also found that losing causes gamblers to gamble even more.
Cheating is one of the traits that has long fascinated science. Nearly one in five Americans believe cheating on your taxes is morally okay, or isn't a moral issue at all according to a Pew Research Center survey. Cheating on a spouse is not a concern for nearly 10% of adults according to that same study. Cheating may be particularly likely for a man with power and sometimes it's those who shout the loudest about high moral standards who cheat the most because in some strange
way, they think cheating is ethically justifiable in specific circumstances.
Gossiping might not seem all that bad, but it can be horribly destructive and unfair. Baboons groom each other to maintain strong social ties, but we are more evolved, so we use gossip as social glue. Gossip sets group boundaries and improves self-esteem. So while evolution tells us to judge and talk about other people, what's hurtful is that the goal of gossip is not truth or accuracy; it's the bond created, at the expense of someone else of course.

The 10 Most Destructive Human Behaviors Continued...
Another area of study has been the human capacity for self-destruction. We stick with a bad
habit, even when we know the risks, because of the tendency to live in the moment or limited future, not thinking about the long term. We hold fast to our bad habits because of our inborn defiance, a need for social acceptance, an inability to truly understand the nature of the risk, a genetic predisposition to addiction or the ability to rationalize unhealthy habits. We focus on the exceptions to known statistics.
Bullying has been shown by some research to be rooted in the home environment. If a child is allowed to bully a sibling and the behavior goes unchecked, they take the bullying into school. But bullying happens to adults to (30% of U.S. office workers experience it too) and the grown up kind is driven by a need to gain power and status. Bullying typically starts small and then slowly but surely gets bigger and more intimidating. The best response is one that's rational, specific
and consistent.
Artificially remaking ourselves is a dangerous compulsion that shows no signs of stopping. By the year 2015, a full 17% of U.S. residents will be undergoing a cosmetic procedure. The practice of changing or marking the body is an ancient one, often linked to cults and religions. Some of what we do today sounds pretty tame when compared to the procedures of old. What's more, the idea that if you look better you'll magically be happier persists, and we do live in a world where people do
care what you look like, where more attractive people succeed.
Stress is a killer, we all know that. Yet we work harder, longer than ever even as we recognize that the workplace is a source of stress, as are children or aging parents. Technology is now blurring the lines between work and off time, and nearly half of Americans do bring work home. Getting enough sleep and being regularly active are the best ways to fight stress and win.
